Methods, Philosophy, and Values
At June Dog, we work to address problems at their root.
We take an ethological approach, which means we act as dog detectives- we assess surface behavioral problems and work with guardians to understand the evolutionary context and function of those behaviors.
We focus on understanding behavior as a means of communication and give you and your dog the shared language to express feelings and needs, negotiate boundaries, and communicate safely and appropriately. We prioritize the development of mutually respectful and secure relationships, which creates the trust needed to work and live harmoniously as a team.
Instead of training for “obedience”, we use enrichment to teach new skills and provide healthy outlets for behaviors. This helps decrease boredom, allows for autonomy and choice, encourages learning and play, builds relationship and emotional resilience, and promotes the overall wellness of your animal.
We view every case as unique- we tailor each management and behavior modification plan to each client, and meet regularly to make adjustments and incrementally build upon skills and learning. We believe the pace is set by the learner, and will work with you to find a solution that fits your goals, lifestyle, ability, and needs.
What does all this actually mean?
We use treats, toys, games, exercise, routine, and tools like baby gates, kongs/lick mats, clickers, leashes, and food puzzles to manage your dog’s behavior, and teach them new skills and new emotional responses. We help you understand your dog’s body language and specific needs, and teach you to modify your behavior and facilitate clearer communication and foster safety.
Our mission is always to improve the well-being of everyone involved without the use of force or fear.
